Thermal, CA—Mark Bluman (COL) started what promises to be an exciting career with Landon de Nyze in the $182,000 5* Qualifier, presented by Great American Insurance Group, held on Thursday during Leg 7 of Major League Show Jumping (MLSJ), the second of back-to-back weeks at Desert International Horse Park (DIHP) in Thermal, California.
Bluman took over the ride on Landon a week ago after the 12-year-old Zangersheide gelding (Comilfo Plus Z x Quadrillo) was purchased by his cousin Daniel from USA’s Kent Farrington at the start of the year. Farrington in the irons, Landon won two medals—including team gold—at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

“Everybody's known Landon for a long time because of Kent, and from the beginning Daniel said the horse could be a good match for me,” said Mark, a pivotal team member of current standings leaders Maccabi United. “Daniel knew that at the end of the day I would end up riding him, so now it's up to me.”
Mark wasted no time in proving his cousin right with a winning margin of more than a second in Thursday’s 5* Qualifier. He and Landon broke the final timers in 40.75 seconds over courses designed by Olaf Petersen, Jr.
Eight finished clear over the first round with five cracking the code on the jump-off track.
Archers team rider Callie Schott (USA) finished as the runner up in 42.05 seconds aboard Garant, owned by Southern Arches. Fellow American Laura Kraut—winner of the previous week’s Coachella Cup—jumped to third for the home squad, the DIHP Roadrunners, in a time of 45.14 seconds riding Kaylee for owner St. Bride’s Farm.
“I didn't go full gas because I honestly don't know the horse very well,” said Mark, 34. “I left out to the double, which was slick, and the run to the last was where I took advantage of being on a mega careful horse.
“It means the world to me to be able to ride a horse of this caliber,” continued Mark of the mount owned by Daniel together with Over The Top Stables. “He has had so many good results and been successful under different riders. I'm very grateful to have him.”
History is repeating itself after Daniel also handed over the reins of MLSJ success story Ubiluc to his younger cousin in 2023. Mark has notched seven international wins with the 13-year-old gelding. He also won the 2024 edition of the MLSJ Palm Spring Grand Prix, a title he will look to defend with Ubiluc on Saturday.
