Behind every round is a partnership built on trust, respect, and communication
At Major League Show Jumping, the most powerful partnerships are not just between teammates but between rider and horse. Every clear round, every jump off, every ribbon begins with trust.
These bonds are built over years through daily training, shared travel, and the kind of pressure filled moments that define a season. They are the foundation of performance and the stories fans remember most.
From iconic pairs who have shaped MLSJ history to the new combinations writing their chapters in Season 5, the rider and horse connection remains the heartbeat of the League. It is where athleticism meets instinct and precision is powered by partnership.
How are horses chosen for competition?
The pathway to the top of show jumping is one of precision. Age, temperament, athletic ability, and style all factor into how a horse is selected and developed.
Most horses step into 5* competition around nine or ten years old. Their prime years often stretch through ages fourteen to sixteen, when experience meets peak athleticism. These are the seasons where talent, training, and partnership align to produce results at the highest level.
Rotation and management
At the elite level, riders rarely rely on a single horse. Most campaign multiple 5* mounts, rotating them based on the calendar, arena conditions, and team strategy.
This balance is as much about performance as it is about longevity. Careful planning ensures horses recover between major classes while keeping riders competitive week after week. It is a system that maximizes results without compromising the partnership at the heart of the sport.
Partnership beyond competition
The most celebrated stories in MLSJ are those where horse and rider remain together for years. That level of trust and understanding is often what separates a clear round from one with faults. Some rider–horse partnerships take time to build, and Lillie Keenan’s connection with Argan de Beliard is proof of what consistency delivers. Together since 2022, the pair have grown into a trusted force at the 5* level, highlighted by an MLSJ Grand Prix win. Their longevity makes them a prime example of the lasting partnerships that define the league.
It’s more than competition, it’s a relationship that powers resilience, results, and unforgettable moments.
