Greenwich, CT—The Trelawny Trailblazers—reigning back-to-back season champions—returned to familiar territory at the top of the podium in the $262,000 Trelawny Farm 5* Team Competition during Major League Show Jumping (MLSJ) Leg 3 at CSI Greenwich.
Anchored by Nayel Nassar (EGY) on speed specialist Ivory TCS and Conor Swail (IRL) on trusted winner Casturano, the Trailblazers welcomed Natalie Dean (USA) back to the roster aboard Oasis van de Bucxtale.
“This is our home show, so we really wanted to put a strong team together and have a good performance,” acknowledged Nassar on how the Trailblazers—led by team owner Cara Raether Carey—filled their roster for Saturday. “Trelawny sponsored the event and our whole families were here watching. We didn't want to let anyone down, and I'm glad we were able to come through today.”
Swail kept hope alive for the Trailblazers in the opening round with the only clear round for his team aboard Casturano. They did it again in round two, matched by another clear from Nassar and Ivory TCS. The rally sent Dean and Oasis van de Bucxtale to the gold medal jump-off against Maccabi United’s Vanessa Hood (ISR) on FBW Graphik. A rail on the floor and a slower time on the clock settled the Maccabi United—also including Ilan Bluman (COL) riding Phelina de Septon and Mark Bluman (COL) aboard Acajou—with silver.
“My horse is naturally very quick, but actually I felt like there were places where I was a little slow,” admitted Dean. “I added a couple where I was planning to leave one more stride out, but she's naturally so competitive that it added enough pressure.”
Dean crossed the final timers in 39.70 seconds, while Hood pulled a rail to add three seconds and finish in a time of 44.65.
The bronze medal was determined in a jump-off between Leg 1 winners Helios and Team KPF. Fielded by Rene Dittmer (GER), Michael Duffy (IRL) and Richard Vogel (GER), Helios stayed in the fight when Dittmer riding Corsica X beat out KPF rider Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) aboard Dhalida in the opening head-to-head for bronze.
After a strong start to the season, Maccabi United holds on to the top spot in the overall standings with the Trailblazers hot on their heels just three points behind. Helios is hanging on in third, 20 points off the lead. View current standings here.
“Each opportunity we have to close the gap on the leaders, we have to try and take it,” said Swail. “Today, we hung in there and did a good job. I felt like it was great sport and great for the team.”.
